A former Disney star Selena Marie Gomez turns into a successful solo singer and a philanthropist. She started her career in Barney and Friends show and played in some movies. She appeared as the lead for Wizards of Waverly Place in 2007. Along with her acting, she showed her musical ability by releasing popular songs. Behind the fame, she suffered from lupus and mental illness, and was brave enough to speak up to public.
Was born in Texas, on July 22 1992, to Mandy and Ricardo Gomez, she began her career since young. The 90’s kid show Barney and Friends was the first show Gomez featured in for two years. She continued acting in several movies for small roles, including Spy Kids 3: Game Over (2003) and Walker, Texas Ranger: Trial by Fire (2005). Her first Disney project was The Suite Life of Zack & Cody, guest starred as Gwen in 2006. It followed with a role in Hannah Montana series and had the first starring role in Wizards of Waverly Place as Alex Russo.
In 2008, Gomez appeared as the lead for Another Cinderella Story and featured in the animated movie Horton Hears a Who!. The following year, together with Demi Lovato, she starred in Princess Protection Program. She also played in fantasy movie Wizards of Waverly Place: The Movie. In 2012, Gomez participated in voicing a character in Hotel Transylvania and also in the sequels in 2015 and 2018.
As if her successful acting debut was not enough, she began her career in music industry by singing the movie soundtrack. She also worked with an electronic-influenced pop band Selena Gomez & the Scene with several albums, including Kiss & Tell (2009) and A Year without Rain (2011) before they disbanded in 2012.
Gomez rose to stardom by being solo with single “Come & Get It” in 2013, “Good for You” (2015), and some albums. She also sang the soundtrack for Netflix drama 13 Reasons Why in 2018. Her singles “Look at Her Now” and “Lose You to Love Me” were both chart-toppers and brought the album Rare (2020) peaked at the No. 1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart.
Selena Gomez revealed that she had battled an autoimmune disease called lupus since 2014 for more than two years. As the disease kept advancing, she had a kidney transplant in 2017 with her friend, Francia Raísa volunteered as the donor. Gomez recovered after got several complications during the procedure.
She then helped raising more than $500,000 for lupus research and had a chance to deliver her speech at the Lupus Research Alliance Annual Gala. In the same year, she earned woman of the year at Billboard Women in Music ceremony.
Gomez also spoke out about her mental illness. She battled with anxiety, depression, and revealed that she diagnosed as bipolar in 2020. Her struggle through the health issues is narrated in one of her songs in Rare album, “Fun”. Outside of music and acting, Selena Gomez also an entrepreneur with her beauty line “Rare Beauty” that launched in 2020 and had a cooking show in HBO called Selena & Chef.
